I am just now starting to play around with shooting videos to show of models. Aint the internet great?! With youtube it is just too easy to share some pictures in motion with like-minded gamers. Something that every teenager has already figured out, but I guess gamers are just late to the party. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, my first run through wasn't great. But I see where I can make improvements. Lighting as always is the biggest issue and I already have some thoughts about this. The idea actually came from a video from the Independent Characters Facebook page where Carl had some videos of a battle. I hope to take this idea as far as possible, even making short battle reports with a more 'shaky' cam feel. </div>

The new models are fantastic of course. But the real joy is trying to put together models that were meant to kill xenos but are now forced to slay other battle brothers. Hordes of bolters, the new volkite charges, missile launchers, these are all weapons that can kill even the mightiest of marines (with a bit of luck).<br />
The terminators, while being an excellent kit from Forge World, still have the problems of terminators. Armed with low initiative weapons, they killed only when they were allowed to strike. Which, sadly, wasn't that often. But who cares, the models are just awesome.<br />
One thing that people commonly were asking about was how well the brass etch worked on the new style models. If you aren't used to brass etch, it can be a little tricky to get off of the sprue and onto the model. But once there, it catches detail amazingly well and can turn a standard guard basilisk into a machine of the Death Guard.<br />
I hope you enjoy the pictures, it was fun standing the legion up again to shoot some shots! Scroll down for lots of pictures.<br />

Due to the weather delays I know a few people who wanted to play were not able, but still we had about 12 players.<br />

This awesome Death Guard army belongs to Ty F. He ended up winning the event.<br />

Another trip to Chicago is in the books and we had a great time! Despite the bad weather at the start of the convention things went very well. For those that didn't know, there was widespread flooding around Chicago. It caused numerous travel delays for out of town attendees and I head more than one horror story from locals trying to balance playing Adepticon and getting several feet of water of their basements.<br />
No matter what mother nature threw at the folks at Adepticon, they threw a great con and I want to thank them for that. The swag bag again was full of great things. Some new cool miniatures to play around with as well as plenty of things to read and explore.<br />

This year is also the year that I got my first major award- The Emperor's Champion in the Horus Heresy Betrayal tournament! So how about that!?! I think it deserves a free re-roll once per game.<br />
I have plenty of more pictures to share from Adepticon including my Horus Heresy Death Guard, some Nurgle Space Marines, and some Team Tournament love. But first it is time to get some sleep, because didn't have much in Chicago!DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-39098635978281161392013-01-30T16:07:00.000-06:002013-01-30T16:07:48.834-06:00Nurgle Blight Drones<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Well it has finally begun, preparation for Adepticon 2013. Actually the prep started this past summer when I got these beautiful Nurgle models at GenCon. It's just now that I put the finishing touches on them. First off, the Blight Drones are awesome straight out of the Forge World packaging. Its only a few pieces to assemble, and anything you mess up fits in well with the chaotic nature and irregular joints of this true piece of Nurgle technology. The models were a blast to paint as well. The corroded armor on the front nicely contrasts the diseased flesh on the back. The front armor got typical airbrush techniques along with weathering powders for the corrosion. The rear mainly got a shaded basecoat and then many, many layers of washes and inks for the final color.<br />
<br />
This past fall, Forge World surprised many of us with Imperial Armour Aeronautica. While I didn't expect to get a great boost with the Blight Drone, I was surprised to see its final points. At 125 points per model, you quickly get into land raider territory without actually getting a huge tank. The armor is thin, 12 front, and two less in the rear and only a couple of hull points. The fact that it can fly and hover is a life saver or else it would go the way of the lowly land speeder! Its weapons are useful. but it is the Phelm Cannon that I have used the most- Large Blast AP3. Fear me loyalist marines!<br />
<br />
So this year at Adepticon, expect to see these bad boys in the 40K Friendly event. In fact, get ready for lots of posts concerning the chosen of Nurgle!<br />

And you are right! Except many of the Dark Age models are just awesome for using in Horus Heresy or even Necromunda for that matter.<br />
GenCon 2011 Found me looking for some good 40K RPG miniatures and <a href="http://dark-age.com/content.php?48-Gallery&faction=outcast#!prettyPhoto" target="_blank">Hoj</a> from Dark Age looked simply awesome. Unfortunately, the project never went anywhere. This fall, while waiting to see what the Codex: Chaos Space Marines was going to do, I finally put paint on the model. Originally was going to get those Dark Age weapons off and replace them with chainswords and boltpistols, but I knew any converting would only serve to make the project go slower, not faster. So here he rests, just a lonely Dark Age model in my "GW collection".<br />
<br />
The base is a Secret Weapon Miniature base that I got awhile back from them. I wanted the model to match the industrial wasteland idea the base provided. So lots of SWM weathering powers are on this guy. Oddly enough- the scruff is a black "metallic" powder very gently applied! I had been having huge problems getting the ole' 5 o'clock shadow on human models. The typical methods left me lacking- water down regular paints, washes, stippling, etc. I tried them all and found them all lacking. However, I lucked into making this work and I think it looks great.<br />
Of course, I pinned this model a couple of years ago... and well, never moved the pin until after I finished painting him! Oh well, but he ain't going nowhere!<br />
<br />
++EDIT++ When I first posted this, I used "Horus Heresy" instead of "Dark Heresy." Heh, what a blunder. But I guess that shows you all where my mind has been the last couple of weeks. If all goes well, I should start being able to show you pictures of the Horus Heresy army I am planning to build. But that is for another time.<br />

Towards the end of 5th edition 40K we played a lot of Special Operations Kill Zone. The games were great fun and people who didn't ever get much gaming out of 5th edition were able to pull some old models off of the shelf and get some games in. Its good to hear that Jim has <a href="https://www.box.com/s/6rok2xkf75xneaeu9kex" target="_blank">6th edition Kill Zone</a> in development as we are sure to play!<br />
<br />
Before I get into the pictures, the blog is featured in <a href="http://natfka.blogspot.com/2013/01/faeit-212-blogexchange-blogs-from_14.html?showComment=1358277133464#c778951754028367674" target="_blank">Faeit 212's Blog Roll</a> today. Thanks for the push and welcome anyone that makes this blog a regular read! I always follow anyone who follows this blog and try to interact with them as much as possible.<br />
<br />
Today, I have henchmen of the Inquistor's service. This was actually one of my first models when I started getting into miniature gaming. The Necromunda Goliath models are great for this. The model was stripped and repainted a few years ago, but now is added to the ranks for when I need a few extra bodies on the field! Below is an old school Acolyte sporting a club and a lasgun, you know the obvious weapons of choice in the far future of battles! The model was one of my first Inquisitor type models and still one of my favorites.<br />
<br />
I am busy working on Chaos Space Marine Nurgle and Death Guard (Horus Herasy Era) armies as we speak. Soon, I'll have pictures and stores to share!<br />

It seems fitting to end the first week of the New Year off with some Assassins. These ladies were feared by most opponents during our Kill Zone games. The ladies come with a boatload of power weapon attacks. Of course there is some downside, low toughness and subpar armor save. Still, once they closed with someone, it started to get interesting quick!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The models themselves were very different from the rest of the army. The lady on the left is an Infinity model, <a href="http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/2011/miniatures/szalamandra-squadron-2/" target="_blank">Szalamandra</a>. Originally this was purchased for our Rogue Trader RPG. We had a female player who was looking for a cool model for her assassin. I wanted to surprise her with this model and low and behold- she found one too! The game went on using her model instead, and Szalamandra stayed on my painting shelf.<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oHoJvzgEh1Q/UOQ-f2M9aVI/AAAAAAAABQ0/3cPpieZKtAA/s1600/IMG_3515.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oHoJvzgEh1Q/UOQ-f2M9aVI/AAAAAAAABQ0/3cPpieZKtAA/s320/IMG_3515.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lady on the right was<a href="http://dark-age.com/images/faction_gallery/forsaken/dag1104.jpg" target="_blank"> Dark Age Forsaken</a> model. It was originally, wait for it... our Rogue Trader game. No particular person or character this time around. I bought it when the model first released seeing some potential with the model and then quickly lost it in my bin of models! When she resurfaced, it seemed like an obvious addition to the team. Despite a few size differences, the models actually worked out well. Most players seem to like a few non-GW models thrown into the mix giving them something new to look over while playing. But mostly I just don't like the GW assassin models. That being said, these models are not perfect. The sizing is off and one obviously doesn't have a pair of power swords strapped to her waist!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKkTA5ZROUY/UOQ-fqUwIvI/AAAAAAAABQw/cov8inrn4DE/s1600/IMG_3516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally some top down action. She was ready to take on all the chaos scum she could find (and hold that objective). She actually made all of those rapid fire saves.... except the last one. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still more Inquisitors from Adepticon 2012 Special Operations Kill Zone event to show you all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To be honest, the whole Inquisitorial thing started with the acolyte with an eviscerator! I mean a dude carrying a super long chainsaw that he uses to "persuade" people to his side of the Emperor's will is a super cool thing. His draw backs are huge, even in 5th edition. Being toughness 3 and initiative 1 is no way to actually survive carrying that gigantic weapon, but still it was cool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the other hand, the Acolyte with the storm shield and power weapon was thrown in because (a) I had the model sitting on the shelf, and (b) toughness 3 with a 3++ adds to your survivability a lot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C1hEFhSMDkI/UOQ5HKWwV0I/AAAAAAAABQE/mxiv859vLqY/s1600/IMG_3511.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C1hEFhSMDkI/UOQ5HKWwV0I/AAAAAAAABQE/mxiv859vLqY/s320/IMG_3511.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It didn't take long for me to pick the Kill Zone special rule to give these guys each a +1 toughness. It helped keep them alive a bit longer. Still, my evisterator hasn't caused a single wound!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RiWRGI733Zc/UOQ5HPOJSAI/AAAAAAAABQA/jyxUeCXj8ug/s1600/IMG_3512.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RiWRGI733Zc/UOQ5HPOJSAI/AAAAAAAABQA/jyxUeCXj8ug/s320/IMG_3512.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
On the painting front I tried using some new techniques when I popped these guys off of their old bases and onto these new resin Secret Weapon Miniature bases. There are some weathering powders in the rust and green ooze. Then I tried to get a little hyper realistic to make them 'pop' some. I think the effect worked well and was quick to pull off. Seeing a whole squad like this on the awesome terrain they had set up was a blast!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FcKfxSwEhzs/UOQ5HO2vlwI/AAAAAAAABQI/efj2nayLMU4/s1600/IMG_3513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FcKfxSwEhzs/UOQ5HO2vlwI/AAAAAAAABQI/efj2nayLMU4/s320/IMG_3513.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oOL3yY9B3mc/UOQ5HzRxxqI/AAAAAAAABQM/4wuGMrknKkQ/s1600/IMG_3514.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oOL3yY9B3mc/UOQ5HzRxxqI/AAAAAAAABQM/4wuGMrknKkQ/s320/IMG_3514.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, an action shot from the event. It ended sadly for the Inquistorial team!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Way back to the early spring of this year, 5th Edition was still going strong and Special Operations: Kill Zone was happening at<a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/2012/04/adepticon-2012-kill-zone-and-oh-yeah-im.html" target="_blank"> Adepticon</a>. After looking through my stash of spare miniatures I decided to do an Inquisitorial Kill Team after I found this Inquisitor that was perfect for the Ordos Xenos. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzj7quxwL0U4S_O_VtFlZ8dEJxM7a5p6HSaBT-6XfD1XOhRjC48OkYrI_F1UCA8L580peZlRfrct20sWsBeNlH95nzfbi5CsY4h_cuC6QBR_5v_SQqrTd3-Rq0fEWq2p-2SV_guF5Rytc/s1600/IMG_3507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzj7quxwL0U4S_O_VtFlZ8dEJxM7a5p6HSaBT-6XfD1XOhRjC48OkYrI_F1UCA8L580peZlRfrct20sWsBeNlH95nzfbi5CsY4h_cuC6QBR_5v_SQqrTd3-Rq0fEWq2p-2SV_guF5Rytc/s320/IMG_3507.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fancy gun (now with psy-bolt ammunition) was constructed out of spare Necron bits on a lark several years ago. I have no idea how I did it. Sadly there was no blogger at that time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The miniature was mostly painted several years ago. This was when I was following 'Eavy Metal painting guides. There was no blending and some of the transitions were awfully hard. But it was the common paint procedure for the era. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The base was from Secret Weapon Miniatures. The old bases were bland, so new ones had to be had! The weathering was actually done with just paints, no powders this time. I was going for the hyper realistic bases to try to match the older paint job on the models. I think the combination turned out pretty good. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bVG-BHfqZg4/UNB4fktrRNI/AAAAAAAABMA/5SSWipDLyN4/s1600/IMG_3510.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bVG-BHfqZg4/UNB4fktrRNI/AAAAAAAABMA/5SSWipDLyN4/s320/IMG_3510.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I suspect that there will be Special Ops: Kill Zone happening in my gaming group soon. We are still having a lot of fun with base 6th Edition. There will always be a place for small skirmish style games. </div>

<br />DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-52550354833752570212012-10-03T17:26:00.000-05:002012-10-03T17:26:07.844-05:00Dark Angels Librarian TerminatorAs many of you know, my favorite marine army is the<a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/search/label/ultramarines" target="_blank"> Ultramarines</a>. I love the look of the sharp blue on the battlefield and that is what really drew me to the army (you can now take your Smurf jokes and take a hike, lol!). Anyway, it alway amused me that the color for Librarians was Ultramarine Blue. So when my teammates needed a Librarian painted, I was a happy painter.<br />
Being Dark Angels, the model needed some green which was easy to add to the knee pain and the back of the cloak. One way to make your models stand out is to color the back side of a robe, cloak, or whatever different than the front side. Its a simple note that I see many people opt not to do on their models.<br />
Again, the model was presented to me with the base pre-assembled, but I loved the skulls and light sprinkle of rock. Unlike the <a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/2012/09/dark-angels-chaplain-terminator.html" target="_blank">Chaplain</a>, the Terminator just has a lot of stuff going on. This time, a simple base does the trick.<br />

These models were again most excellent in many ways. First of, these are some of the only orc models that actually rank up and assemble without causing mind-numbing headaches. Secondly, the models were a snap to put together while remaining highly flexible in poses no matter the weapons that were chosen. Lastly, the large smooth areas on the armor allowed me to use the snow on metal effect extensively which I thing came off very smoothly.<br />

I hope that by now everyone is knee deep into sixth edition Warhammer 40K and is loving it as much as I do. With the rumors starting to get more and more firm on <a href="http://natfka.blogspot.com/2012/09/new-dark-angel-rumors-release-date.html" target="_blank">Dark Angels as the next codex</a> after Chaos Space Marines, I figured it was time to show off some models done earlier this year.<br />
<br />
As you may remember, our <a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/search/label/adepticon" target="_blank">Adepticon team tournament</a> this year featured Dark Angels in all of their special forms. I was tasked with painting up several of the terminators for the army.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YejsF97Viz4/UGNb-aa-CHI/AAAAAAAABCA/GZ9NB1e0nig/s1600/IMG_3488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YejsF97Viz4/UGNb-aa-CHI/AAAAAAAABCA/GZ9NB1e0nig/s320/IMG_3488.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This particular model showed up assemebled and the base already done with the owners bits attached. Since the armor was going to be fairly bland with the typical black scheme, I wanted the large pieces on the base to attract the eye, and tie into the casing on the combi-melta. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1nB1hzWWw9A/UGNb-h3L93I/AAAAAAAABCI/h1zqNC7T-5w/s1600/IMG_3489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1nB1hzWWw9A/UGNb-h3L93I/AAAAAAAABCI/h1zqNC7T-5w/s320/IMG_3489.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The greens were mostly done with glazes after painting a very light and bright green as the base coat. This is once of the first models I used this technique to good effect, and on such a large portion of the finished product. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-frZO6eAbiSs/UGNb-YJ-UuI/AAAAAAAABB8/1av_8kzaBco/s1600/IMG_3490.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-frZO6eAbiSs/UGNb-YJ-UuI/AAAAAAAABB8/1av_8kzaBco/s320/IMG_3490.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>

It was strange spending so much time on other orcs not painting green. But not with these chaps. I spent time trying to make sure the feral nature of these naturally feral creatures popped out. More contrast in the face and teeth was where I focused. The faces got a treatment of the new <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat800006a&prodId=prod1500266a" target="_blank">yellow glaze</a> which really helped to add some pop. The teeth got several doses of <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=54&products_id=218" target="_blank">Secret Weapon Miniature washes</a> (technically glazes as well).<br />

First off, goblins are pretty awesome in the lore of Warhammer Fantasy. They are mean, vile, aggressive, and completely nutty! These spider riders were awesome to prepare and easy to paint up. I could see myself making a full goblin army (one day... in the far future perhaps!)<br />
The purple and orange colors carried over nicely to these units. The purple on the spiders shows nicely and the orange tops gives some contrast.<br />

I've always loved Goblin Fantatics. Its like giving your ADD youngster a kilo of coke and a machine gun. These dudes are wild and crazy and love playing against them. To be honest, these were some of my favorite models to paint up. </div>

Night Goblins are standard, effective, and the back bone to a goblin army. While I'd like a bit more variation in the models, they assembled easily and painted up nicely. The banner is just completely full of awesomeness. What more can I say about the goblins without getting cheesy?!?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2400586a_13249999390_WDJuly2012_873x627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2400586a_13249999390_WDJuly2012_873x627.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
By now many, if not most of us have seen visions of 6th Edition 40K (via <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440349a&prodId=prod1640005a" target="_blank">White Dwarf 390</a>), and I for one love it. If you haven't had a chance to read through #390, its entirely devoted to 40K. Most of it is a paid advertisement for the newest edition with all of the eye candy you expect to see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2401006a_60040199026_40KRulebookENG_873x627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2401006a_60040199026_40KRulebookENG_873x627.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
But what has me excited about 6E? Forging a Narrative.<br />
Matt Ward talks on page 22 about telling a story in each battle. It isn't so much just winning a game, but being able to have your "unsung heroes earn honor and glory." Characters can pick out individual models, challenge other characters, and get a special ability before the game starts. But its not just new rules for heroes, its that Games Workshop has purposely strayed away from making a system designed for parity, designed for tournaments, designed to show off a players skill. Its clear, GW wants its game to show off GW. And you know, what? I'm ok with this.<br />
<br />
Fortifications<br />
Having stayed away from the rumors for the last several months, I still wasn't surprised to see mysterious terrain in the new rules. But what did surprise me is the close tie-in with Citadel scenery and the new Fortification rules. Its a beautiful tie-in to allow your army to gain some very real benefits. It will be interesting to see how this affects play. Should I expect my opponents to show up with their own scenery? <br />
In other news, I've actually been working on my scenery for the last couple of weeks. Its kinda by mistake, but I'm eager to use some of my newly prepared Fortifications!<br />
<br />
Overwatch<br />
Its hard to say before the rules come up, but WD suggests that Overwatch comes in two forms. Classical overwatch from days gone by (or standard in <a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/2012/04/adepticon-2012-kill-zone-and-oh-yeah-im.html" target="_blank">Special Ops: Kill Zone</a>) and as a charge reaction. Finally! I've been asking for a rule like this for several editions. It definitely changes the landscape in Warhammer Fantasy Battles, and certainly my Imperial Guard hope it changes things in the far future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKOjRVXlpBsfWrD_ZSFMzq-Rc9lSDbFZsa_wycLAH2iU-LjLSQ5j8XGp6kw_2uRvnIq_0-MfitbSHClVzq8uKCmowSV0s14zAh7C34ugDqnim8T-UXBIndPJweS223a9maO6RuDWzn4Ug/s1600/IMG_8453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKOjRVXlpBsfWrD_ZSFMzq-Rc9lSDbFZsa_wycLAH2iU-LjLSQ5j8XGp6kw_2uRvnIq_0-MfitbSHClVzq8uKCmowSV0s14zAh7C34ugDqnim8T-UXBIndPJweS223a9maO6RuDWzn4Ug/s320/IMG_8453.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Flyer Rules<br />
There are finally some real flyer rules coming out. I wish the rule "zoom" was there (it just sounds too silly), but at least a dude with a hand gun isn't going to easily be able to shoot my planes out of the sky while they are flying around. However, it seems (pg 67) that exploding vehicles deliver a staggering S10 hit to those inside! Yikes! I don't know now what this means for mech armies, but you know have to account for flyers in your games.<br />
<br />
Other Rules<br />
Pre-measuring and random charge length didn't get much coverage, but seem to be in the rules. I'm all for these rules if it speeds up the game and avoid "cheating measuring" I've seen more and more the last year. My only fear is that it might actually slow down the game as some players will spend an eternity making sure models are where they want them.<br />
Hull Points are definitely in and look to replace the former vehicle damage chart and functions more like wounds on a standard IC. This might mean my Vendettas fire a full strength until its HP's are fully gone. I can live with that!<br />
<br />
Old Rules that Have Changed<br />
Feel No Pain is now 5+, Reserves start on turn two at 3+, you loose your assault bonus with multi-assaulting units, Overwatch Flamers might do d3 wounds (not automatic), and most significantly wound allocation might be gone and replaced with nearest models take the first wounds.<br />
<br />
We will see on Saturday, but sci-fi war gamers have some exciting times ahead with an edition change.DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-30620831373801940502012-06-12T08:15:00.000-05:002012-06-12T08:15:00.178-05:00Using Snow EffectsThere has been some talk of the snow effects used on the Orc army and I wanted share my experiences using Woodland Scenics <a href="http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/SN140/page/1" target="_blank">Snow Flakes</a>. Mr. Justin has a <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=6" target="_blank">great tutoria</a>l about using Snow Flakes which was my starting point.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rfkmo610aTI/T87nPqEgySI/AAAAAAAAA_c/krNfiCKpq6Q/s1600/IMG_3197.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rfkmo610aTI/T87nPqEgySI/AAAAAAAAA_c/krNfiCKpq6Q/s320/IMG_3197.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is the effect used with WS's <a href="http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/C1211/page/1" target="_blank">Realistic Water</a>. I don't like it, to be honest. True it makes a wet snow appearance. But it doesn't have the pop that I was looking for. It was very realistic, but did catch my eye. You can also see that Realistic Water is somewhat expensive, and this technique uses a fair amount of the water (and less of the cheaper snow flakes).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0CPkebm2NQA/T87m6YpT6wI/AAAAAAAAA-0/CDKPWG2MP-w/s1600/IMG_3192.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0CPkebm2NQA/T87m6YpT6wI/AAAAAAAAA-0/CDKPWG2MP-w/s320/IMG_3192.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is the effect with PVA glue which I liked much more. First off, it gives a much sharper contrast against the dark colors on the orcs. True it does look like 'fresh' snow and I used it on models that I thought would be 'out front' more in this army. It also was placed on models where I thought snow would collect. Its also much cheaper. I currently buy my PVA glue by the <a href="http://www.lowes.com/pd_41143-63-E386_0__?productId=3067531" target="_blank">gallon</a>. Its cheaper than RW (by far!) and has far more uses. Face it, at this stage of the hobby you should by buying your PVA glue by the gallon!DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-19214756551583193372012-06-08T08:15:00.000-05:002012-06-08T08:15:00.152-05:00How To Deal With an Orc Horde (As a Painter)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-baDR-hS0kvU/T87nZz8whhI/AAAAAAAAA_s/SvMmLSqKpiI/s1600/IMG_3199.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="216" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-baDR-hS0kvU/T87nZz8whhI/AAAAAAAAA_s/SvMmLSqKpiI/s640/IMG_3199.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Orc Horde is upon us!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X5PXTWrNOqk/T87nU1D0cTI/AAAAAAAAA_k/zcDzcFqFQiU/s1600/IMG_3198.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X5PXTWrNOqk/T87nU1D0cTI/AAAAAAAAA_k/zcDzcFqFQiU/s320/IMG_3198.jpg" width="320" /></a>Ranking models for Warhammer Fantasy is a much different task than arranging individual models for Warhammer 40K. You have to keep models, in rows of five or ten around four rows deep, lined up in a (near) perfect square. This is great when dealing with models like goblins, elfs, and humans. When it comes to orcs, the process sucks. Big Time. These Goblins have it easy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I_E0XiIXjL0/T87mqvGpXVI/AAAAAAAAA-U/lANyyx8TD0M/s1600/IMG_3188.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I_E0XiIXjL0/T87mqvGpXVI/AAAAAAAAA-U/lANyyx8TD0M/s320/IMG_3188.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
40K orks are allowed to be more free-form but in WFB the bulky arms and legs are nearly impossible to keep square without making the models all face the same direction. When Jason and I first started talking about the army, it was clear we both liked the 'chaos' of having spears, swords, and shields sticking out in all directions. Its a far cry from the old days of WFB where metal models all faced the same diagonal direction. Those were dark days of modeling!<br />
<br />
<br />
The easiest way to make these models form up, is to cheat. By making use of the long bases and and the square bases from Citadel you can break up the boring squares and add some depth to some of the filler models. You can take advantage of being able to squeeze four models closer together than on four individual bases leaving room to rank up all the models around the larger bases. Here I used the <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470008a&prodId=prod1590008" target="_blank">50mm Monster Bases</a> to squeeze these orcs together to protect them from the incoming arrow fire.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">With the Savage Orc Boys I need to pull a different trick out the box. Jason wanted to have the ability to run one forty orcs unit or two twenty orc strong units, each with banners and musicians. The problem was that I was only given forty models. So naturally two, models were taken out as extra musician and banner which allowed me to put one model in a spot for two in the main rank.(Here I used two </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470008a&prodId=prod1570006" target="_blank">25mm x 50mm</a></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"> bases). <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vgbPQ-HvNyY/T9FuW_QJhdI/AAAAAAAABBM/QPTDGyToGIw/s1600/IMG_3211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vgbPQ-HvNyY/T9FuW_QJhdI/AAAAAAAABBM/QPTDGyToGIw/s320/IMG_3211.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So the full squad contains 38 models with two extra stand-ins!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6fiT2OOiyF4/T87mwG2WeiI/AAAAAAAAA-g/snfgtXFO02c/s1600/IMG_3190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6fiT2OOiyF4/T87mwG2WeiI/AAAAAAAAA-g/snfgtXFO02c/s320/IMG_3190.jpg" width="214" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And they get to play king of the hill.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The last thing I wanted to do but just wasn't able to make it work with the orcs is to make a formidable shield wall, like the Greek Hoplites. It was outside of my ability and didn't fit the aggressive nature of the orcs. I compromised. So the front rank here was pushed far forward to make room for the second rank of models. I also positioned orcs taking the ranged shooting while getting ready for the initial hand to hand combat.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UOn3zeX7A8g/T87nkVh-4aI/AAAAAAAAA_8/Sa5y9gMJ-6Y/s1600/IMG_3201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UOn3zeX7A8g/T87nkVh-4aI/AAAAAAAAA_8/Sa5y9gMJ-6Y/s320/IMG_3201.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Perhaps another army can hide behind large shields. I'm looking at you Men-At-Arms!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, I used a <a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/2011/10/big-units-in-fantasy.html" target="_blank">number and letter system</a> with stick on labels pasted to the bottom of each model. That way units can be assembled quickly and easily. </div>

<br />
Long time followers of this blog know that I have been working on an Orcs and Goblin Army for <a href="http://dicerolla.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">PappaJJ</a> for greater than one year at this point. I am proudly announcing today, that it is finished! It features over 2K points worth of core units, two 40-orc strong units, and plenty of characters. I'll be posting the army over the next several posts and going into detail about each unit and the heroes. Don't worry, I'll be back to painting 40K armies soon enough. I have lots of Inquisitor models to share.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FcpfiIJKsZM/T87mMQIE2vI/AAAAAAAAA9k/-CZMBUfwH-M/s1600/IMG_3180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FcpfiIJKsZM/T87mMQIE2vI/AAAAAAAAA9k/-CZMBUfwH-M/s400/IMG_3180.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
PappaJJ has been very gracious in making sure I had plenty of time to work on other projects while working on his army. However, I'll make it said that since Adepticon finished this year, I've work hard-core on finishing this army. Now its time for some hard earned time off, mainly to clean up my hobby and painting area!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fkghJTp9UcQ/T87mv6WmxgI/AAAAAAAAA-c/__X0HiOiOP4/s1600/IMG_3189.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fkghJTp9UcQ/T87mv6WmxgI/AAAAAAAAA-c/__X0HiOiOP4/s400/IMG_3189.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One of the cool things about this army is that PappaJJ wanted an unusual paint scheme- no red, no yellow, no black. In fact he wanted winter colors and something that worked well with his Dark Elves. So purple and orange finally emerged as the key colors to balance out the green skin of the orcs. It was a fun army to pain, but using this colors proved to be a fun challenge. It was great fun working with snow effects to try to create some freshly fallen snow. </div>DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-60870188052026109062012-06-02T08:49:00.002-05:002012-06-02T08:49:37.132-05:00Adepticon Team Tournament<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
In the last of my Adepticon 2012 in review posts centers around our Team Tournament Army. If you are not familiar with this particular format, its 4x1,000 armies and you are pared with one of your three teammates randomly each round. The last round is a captains choice. The tournament uses a modified force organization which makes things even more challenging in army creation. You can read more <a href="http://www.adepticon.org/?page_id=3612">here</a>. I'll skip the complaint about how many Grey Knight armies were in attendance and focus on our army!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ETyqNbZyFG4/T8l2xZISPTI/AAAAAAAAA6c/bh3RePmEdbM/s1600/IMG_2916.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ETyqNbZyFG4/T8l2xZISPTI/AAAAAAAAA6c/bh3RePmEdbM/s320/IMG_2916.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
An old friend (as in friend for a long time, not just because he is old!) has wanted to do Dark Angels for some time now. The unusual format provided a great opportunity to use both the Ravenwing and Deathwing squads. In addition, we were able to get a Cestus Assault Ram for the army as well. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the end of the day, we are a non-competitive team and ended up our usual bottom middle-third of the final standings. Our painting earned high scores, but it was theme were we did well, nearly maxing out the points. </div>

Before moving on to GenCon and the other summer cons (as well as getting back to painting) I wanted to share my thoughts about what has become the best miniature wargaming con in the land. <br />
<br />
Adepticon is still the premier wargaming con, bar none (you've heard that already). Don't believe the blogs and what not- the tournaments are only a small part of the experience. Though most of the events are tournament related, most of the players are just here for the experience, meet up with old friends, and games in a well organized area. Its still a Gentlemen's Gaming Con. <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Just an 'average' hobbyist army! No, this was seriously cool DE army display board.</td></tr>

Special Operations: Kill Zone was a blast. You can read more about that <a href="http://drgabe.gabeusry.com/2012/04/adepticon-2012-kill-zone-and-oh-yeah-im.html">here.</a><br />

Giving away a Battlefoam Bag is a recipe to get 1,000 gamers to line up hours before registration begins. I was especially thankful for getting a VIG badge. I'll put that on the list for next year as well! On that note, the Adepticon swag bag has already been a thing of legend. Please keep it that way. Well worth the trip, just to get the bag. This year's special miniatures were nothing short of awesome. <br />
<br />
The only camera I used was my iPhone 4GS. No DSL-R for me this year. And the pictures I got were just a great as any with my big camera. As an added plus, the iPhone was with me everywhere and I wasn't constantly looking after my big camera making sure it didn't sprout legs and wonder off. <br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Registration for an event is purely optional. Despite most events (at least 40K related) being sold out months ago, there were a lot of no-shows for nearly every event. Its certainly possible to show up early and get in an already full event. Trust me. I did it for several events!<br />

<br />
In a sense, this event has become "Lobby Con" for me. Two nights we sat in the Lobby drinking beer and eating (usually pizza) just hanging out, seeing old friends, making new friends, and just talking to other hobbyist. Just hanging out seems to be a very reasonable way to spend a lot of time at Adepticon. <br />

The Team Tournament still remains the highlight of the weekend. The amount of awesome armies and awesome people will never be forgotten. Three of our games were spectacular. And while one game fell flat, the team captain sought me out the next day to apologize and promised a better game next year if were to ever play. So sign me up, we'll be back again for the Team Tournament. <br />

It would be cool to see more "small" vendors in the back halls. Battle Ready Figs and Techtonic (laser cut MDF) had booths set up. But I could envision small vendors with unique hobby supplies or supplements with a very low cost, fan friendly set up. The main vendor hall was nice (as always) but I am interested in seeing what the small guy has up his sleeve. </div>

I was shocked to see the 'lack' of hobbyist involvement with Warmachine. No doubt there were lots of players present, but the amount of cool looking armies was low. In fact, there were many unpainted models. In contrast Warhammer Fantasy and Flames of War had as many players, with many fantastic looking armies. Malifaux remained small, but had a dedicated following. The new Dust Tactics/Warfare game was constantly drawing people's attention. It will be interesting to see what happens to the game in the next year or so. Mantic had their new space dwarves and space 'rats' (i.e. skaven) on display. Expect to see even more 'counts-as' armies next year!<br />

I walked on the afternoon session and added a couple of wins for my Inquistor and ultimately took home best theme/appearance! Yeah, my first Adepticon win! I got a very awesome Chris Borer miniature as well.<br />

Here is a little something special to keep you busy until my next post. Have a great weekend.DrGabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03533061717625520591noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6629663334108642122.post-13649881461968342772011-10-14T10:07:00.000-05:002011-10-14T10:07:00.307-05:00Big Units in FantasyThat sounds like some odd porn title. but its not what I wanted to talk about today!<br />
One of the issues I battled with this Orc army is how to keep track of all of the boys in the unit. Enter the simple and effective solution.<br />
I picked up some customizable printer labels that you can peel off (<a href="http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/683201/Avery-White-Inkjet-Labels-Return-Address/">here</a>) for another project. For this, you simply cut down the label and put them on the underside of the base. Now you know where the guy goes and change the order over time (like for instance if GW changes the rules on you!).<br />
Initially I used a Sharpie but it was hard to see (unless you have the super cool Silver Sharpie) and its hard to change.<br />

There you go. Your simple tip of the day. </div>
